On this page and the following you find some of the animals that can be seen at Avondzon

 

  

Rock Dassie
This is the most common hyrax species in South Africa. It has the size of a rabbit and lives in colonies of up to 60 animals.

Porcupine
These nocturnal animals live in the rock cavities. You find their quails everywhere on the farm.

Genet
This small predator can be seen at night primarily in the trees.
The eighty year old palm tree near the main house is a favored hide-out for some of them.

                               Caracal (Rooikat)
The caracal is a lynx like cat, measuring about 80-120 cm in length, including a tail of  20-30 cm.
Its stands about 50 cm tall at its shoulder. This predator somtimes catches joung sheep, chickens etc.


             
Mountain ground squirrel
Like the rockdassies, these squirrels can most easily be seen on sunny places on cold mornings and afternoons.

                                  
Scrub hare
The area around the fishpond and the forest are the places where the hares can be seen at dawn or dusk.
Steenbok and mongoose have also been observed at Avondzon.
